Configure a Visualization
Take a query result and style it in the ChartConfigurePanel โ pick a chart type and tune the Data, Style, Axis, Labels, Conditional, and Advanced tabs
Time: About 10 minutes.
You'll need: A query result open in Discover (or a Mosaic tile / Prism).
Role: Tracer, Weaver, or Luminary โ building and editing charts is for Tracer and above.
Every result in Celiq โ whether it came from Discover, a Mosaic tile, or a Prism โ renders through the same viz engine and is styled through one shared drawer, the ChartConfigurePanel. In this tutorial you'll open that panel, choose a chart type, and work across its tabs to format your chart. Anything you learn here applies everywhere a chart appears.
Before you start
- Have a result on screen. Run a query first โ see Create a Reveal โ or open a Mosaic tile or Prism.
- Skim Visualizations to understand the one shared engine and panel.
- Keep Chart types handy for each chart's field requirements and settings.
Steps
Open the ChartConfigurePanel
On the Results tab, Celiq auto-selects a sensible chart for your fields. Open the ChartConfigurePanel on the right (on a Mosaic, hover the tile and choose Configure chart) to start styling.
Pick a chart type
Click the chart-type button to choose a type โ bar, line, area, combo, pie, donut, KPI, table, heatmap, and more. Types that can't represent your current fields are greyed out with a short reason, such as "Needs a date or time dimension" or "Needs a category to split by." Hover a greyed-out type to see exactly what's missing.
Adjust fields on the Data tab
Use the Data tab to set which fields drive the chart โ for example assigning measures to series, or putting a dimension on color. On a combo chart you can set each measure to bar or line under series assignment.
Style it on the Style, Axis, and Labels tabs
Move through Style (layout, colors, the Color palette), Axis (titles, scales, X-label rotation), and Labels (data labels, label type). Only the controls the chosen chart type actually supports appear active โ disabled controls show a reason rather than a fake option.
Add rules on Conditional and tune Advanced
Use the Conditional tab to highlight cells or values by rule (column, operator, value, background and text color), and the Advanced tab for the remaining fine-tuning such as reference lines on bar, line, area, and combo charts.
Preview and save
Changes preview live as you make them. Use undo, redo, or reset if needed, then Save to persist โ or Cancel to revert to the last saved state.
Result
Your chart is formatted and saved. Because the panel is shared, the styling travels with the chart: a chart you style in Discover keeps that styling when you pin it to a Mosaic or open it as a Prism. To verify it stuck, reopen the panel โ your settings should be exactly as you left them.
If your edits disappear, you likely closed the panel with Cancel instead of Save. Reopen the panel, redo your changes, and choose Save.
Next steps
- Let Celiq recommend a type automatically in Use the Smart Chart Picker.
- Add your finished chart to a dashboard in Build Your First Mosaic.
- Review every chart's field requirements in Chart types.
