Use the Smart Chart Picker
Let Celiq recommend the right chart for your fields and switch chart types safely, with field-requirement guidance built in
Time: About 5 minutes.
You'll need: A query result open in Discover (or a Mosaic tile / Prism).
Role: Tracer, Weaver, or Luminary.
Celiq picks a chart type automatically when you run a query, based on your field mix โ for example, a metric over a date dimension defaults to a line chart, while two or more metrics over time default to a combo chart. The Smart Chart Picker is how you see those recommendations and override them. In this tutorial you'll use it to switch types without ending up with a chart that doesn't fit your data.
Before you start
- Have a result on screen. Run a query first โ see Create a Reveal.
- Read Visualizations for how the engine suggests a default for your data shape.
- Keep Chart types open for each type's field requirements.
Steps
Note the auto-selected type
After you click Run, Celiq auto-selects a sensible chart for your fields on the Results tab. This is your recommended starting point โ refine from here rather than building from scratch.
Open the picker
Open the ChartConfigurePanel and click the chart-type button to launch the Smart Chart Picker. It shows the available chart types for your current selection.
Read the recommendations and gating
Types that don't fit your current fields are greyed out with a short reason โ for example "Needs at least 1 metric", "Needs a date or time dimension", or "Needs a category to split by." Hover any greyed-out type to see exactly what your selection is missing.
Switch the chart type
Click an available type to switch to it. If you choose a type that doesn't match your fields, a โ warning banner appears at the top of the results panel explaining what's missing, and Celiq auto-selects a compatible type so you always see meaningful output.
Satisfy a requirement to unlock a type
Want a greyed-out type? Adjust your fields to meet its requirement โ add a date dimension, an extra metric, or a category to split by โ and the type re-enables. Then reopen the picker and select it.
Result
You've landed on a chart type that fits your data, either by accepting Celiq's recommendation or by switching deliberately with the gating guidance to keep you on track. From here, fine-tune the appearance in the ChartConfigurePanel.
If a chart type you expect is greyed out, hover it. The reason tells you precisely which field โ a date dimension, an extra metric, or a category โ to add or remove to enable it.
Next steps
- Style the chart you chose in Configure a Visualization.
- Add it to a dashboard in Build Your First Mosaic.
- Match types to questions and field needs in Chart types.
